Took em awhile......
In the late 80's-early 90's, The Cult was such a huge part of my life. I knew it wouldn't be the same going into it, and I had seen some footage of this tour on Youtube, so I was preparing. Since Ian and Billy Duffy are pretty much the focus, I'll concentrate on them. We all grow and age, but it just hurts to see our rock stars do so. Ian is no longer the scary, long-haired wild-man boogy-ing to their dark, heavy grooves. He appeared irritated for the 'Electric' start to finish portion of the show. I couldn't tell if he just couldn't deliver the vocals, didn't want to, or was pissed off about the audio and idiot fans holding up their cameras and taping. I also could've done without a lot of the between song banter that bordered on Spinal Tap-ish at some points. The second set had more of the older songs and vocally he seemed to hit his stride. He seemed to come a little more alive during Rain, which started the second part of the show. The whole band really locked-in and the mood started to change for the better. It was a great second half comeback that, for me, took the show from Average to above-average. Billy Duffy isn't a showman. He's a player, and he did just that. I forgot how good he was. Gone were the bright white locks, but the big white Gretsch was there for a bit, and looked/sounded great. Overall, I enjoyed myself. My critique of my dark hero isn't logical. I know anyone comparing me to a 20-year-old version of myself might be wildly disappointed. In the end, he's still a rock star, and delivered the goods. Rock on.
